One of our dentists will carry out an in-depth examination of the oral cavity to evaluate the gum situation.
It is used to diagnose and quantify the loss of tooth support tissues caused by bacteria and to detect the presence of infectious and inflammatory manifestations of the same, typical of periodontal disease.
Laser therapy, which, to date, appears to be one of the best techniques for disinfecting the tissues of the periodontal pocket.
The two terms are not synonymous with each other, let’s see the differences.
Gingivitis means an inflammation of the gum tissues around the tooth; the characteristic symptoms are related to a burning sensation, pain associated with redness, swelling and sometimes bleeding.
Periodontitis, on the other hand, appears to be a real infection of the periodontal tissues or of all the tooth support structures such as the bone socket, the ligament and the gums. This type of pathology can cause all its surrounding tissues to move away from the tooth and, in the most serious cases, lead to mobility and tooth loss. The symptoms can manifest themselves with abscesses, bleeding, pus and the formation of “periodontal pockets” where bacteria nest which aggravate the pathology and can, sometimes, also cause “bad breath”.
Periodontal disease is a pathology that affects the supporting tissues of the tooth: the gum, the periodontal ligament, the root cement and the alveolar bone. In common language, the similar term “pyorrhoea” is sometimes still used, although it has long been abandoned in the medical field. There are different forms of periodontal disease which differ in their causes, extent and severity. Usually the initial state of this pathology is gingivitis which then leads to periodontitis.
Gingivitis and periodontitis are inflammatory diseases of bacterial etiology that mainly affect predisposed subjects. They can be aggravated by:
It is used to diagnose and quantify the loss of tooth support tissues caused by bacteria and to detect the presence of infectious and inflammatory manifestations of the same, typical of periodontal disease (bleeding, pus).
It is carried out with a millimeter manual instrument (periodontal probe) which is made to slide along the entire circumference of each dental element.
This clinical examination is completed by detecting the degree of mobility of each tooth. The “periodontal survey” is therefore useful for diagnosing periodontitis of different severity.
